Haitian Graduation Day

This week we celebrated with six of our kids that graduated from the 6th grade, which is a benchmark grade in Haiti.  If you are privileged to attend school this is a big milestone.  Our kids will have the opportunity to continue their education and set goals for their future.  We are excited to see how each of our students will move forward preparing themselves for life outside of the Hands and Feet family one day.  Here is a picture of our six that graduated this year!

The day began early, food preparations took most of the day.  It is neat to see the similarities in some of the ways we celebrate good times.  Food, decor, dress, fellowship, etc. The graduation ceremony was for the entire school, which includes kindergarten (yes, even in Haiti they celebrate that), 6th grade and then the High School graduates.  It was not the amount of people graduating that made for a lengthy ceremony, but the dancing, speeches, special readings, singing and pictures that went into the celebration.  Once it was over we returned to the Hands and Feet campus and had a celebration.  We had a team in and they brought decorations and helped set up for the party.

We all had plenty to eat and enjoyed our time with the kids and celebrating their success.  After we went up to our Mission Village and watched the opening game of the World Cup.  It was a great day!

Easter in Haiti... (a little late on posting, but better late then never)

This year we celebrated Easter in Haiti.  I am not going to lie it was different…  As a family we celebrated Easter this year without some of the common traditions back in the states and the ones we did celebrate here looked slightly different.   The last few years we have made the resurrection biscuits, they are so fun and yummy, but we didn’t have marshmallows and I couldn’t run to the store and get them this year so we did without.  We did color eggs, or should I say an EGG.  When there are 30 kids you go through eggs really fast, but everyone was happy with their one egg and enjoyed it as a snack after we finished.  The kids also got to enjoy a little confetti egg battle and that was fun to watch, lots of laughter.  We did not have an egg hunt, because instead we hunted mangos!  Funny, I know, but it is mango season and they are plentiful and loud when they fall.  So we took the kids to the pastor of the churches house and climbed trees and collected mangos.  We ended our day with the English service at church.  It was great and really spoke to Major, and we are excited to see what the Lord has in store for his little heart!

So, no, our Easter probably didn’t look “normal” compared to the past, but the most important thing remained the same.  We celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ!  I mean it cannot get any better then that!  Our Savior is constant, never changing and always where we are, always!  It is not the physical things that are needed to celebrate a holiday and that is what I was reminded of this year.

A Trip to the States

For a few weeks we returned to the states to rest and visit with family and friends.  We chose to explore and admire God's creation through rock climbing, hiking, camping, horse back riding and fellowship with those we love!

Here are just a few of the moments we captured.  Enjoy, because we sure enjoyed each moment!
